Online IST 210 Updated
Online IST 210 now has 2 additional labs, along with a brand new problem 2: Parks and Recreation. The NetTixx.com problem has been brought down for the time being, and will be revised and available for those instructors who would like to use it in the future. But for the time being, Parks and Recreation is the primary learning event for Module 2.

Here's a short excerpt from the Problem Overview:

"The Bureau of Parks and Recreation would like to use a database management system (DBMS) to organize, store, and retrieve data concerning class registrations. Major benefits of using a DBMS are the data security and integrity controls, the ease of information manipulation with Structured Query Language (SQL), and the ability to interface with other systems within the Bureau. The Bureau has an existing database design, which provides a foundation for interoperability. Adhering to the table schemas allows other systems and programs to interact with the database. In general, the proposed DBMS capability is an initial step to an interactive class registration system, which allows entering and tracking students and course management. In this project, the SQL is developed to implement the integrity constraints and queries. The SQL will allow students to register for courses as well as for staff personnel to maintain up to date course and student information. The Bureau would like a system that enforces referential integrity and enterprise constraints and performs maintenance operations, queries, and views based on the system requirements outlined in this document."

Two new labs are also available at the labs page, 210.5 and 210.6. The first new lab, 210.5, deals with implementing constraints and business rules on a database, while 210.6 is a combination of two SQL labs used in previous semesters.

All of the new resources for Online IST 210 are compatible with Net DB2, as well as other database applications. The URL to the labs page can be found below.

New Online IST Problem Page Coming
Many of you have asked for the ability to have access to all of the current and past Problem Assignments that are associated with Online IST. We have recently started a project that will provide you and your students with direct access to the entire Online IST Problem portfolio. This Problem library will offer downloads of all current and past Problem Assignments, the associated assessment rubrics, and details related to facilitating a smooth experience.

The Online IST Problem Page will offer you the ability to more easily customize your Online IST course sections. We will be removing the Problem links from the Course Content Interface and providing direct access to all the appropriate problems from the "Resources Tab" so you can select how and when you want to administer the assignments in your class. The Problem Page will provide details related to the associated courses and topics as well as insight into the proper usage of the materials. The Online IST Problem Page will be live and ready to go in mid November for a Spring 2003 rollout.

Look for an extended review of the Online IST Problem Page in the next edition of the eNewsletter. In addition, there will be more details related to this change at the next all IST faculty meeting.

Found a Bug? Have a Suggestion?
Report it to the Online IST Bug/Feedback Tracker.

New to the collection of resources at your fingertips is the Online IST Bug/Feedback tracker. This tool will enable everyone in the Online IST community to report the (hopefully few) bugs they come across. Whether it is a discrepancy in the course content or a problem with loading the interface, this tool will allow the Solutions Institute to more efficiently capture, log, and fix the problems you come across from day to day. In addition, this tool also acts as a great feedback mechanism. So if you have a suggestion or an idea for how we can improve your Online IST experience let us know via the Online IST Bug/Feedback Tracker. It can be found in the Support section of the IST Solutions Exchange under Resources or by visiting the link below.

Online IST Course Materials Available November 15
In an effort to assist the IST Faculty in preparing for the Spring 2003 semester, the updated Online IST Course Materials will be made available November 15, 2002. Online IST 110, 250, 210, and 220 are available as fully tested, 15-week semester versions. We invite you to register your sections at Edison's Toolbox of any of these courses and take advantage of the core learning materials that have been designed.

There are changes in the course content of all of the Online IST courses for the Spring that will enhance your student's learning experience, so registering is a critical step. We have established a strategy that will keep you from having to update your downloaded syllabus page in the future. Updating Your Syllabus Page
Each semester, it is very important to go register your section of Online IST by visiting Edison's Toolbox at the Solutions Exchange. By registering your section, you will have access to the latest materials and resources that are available each semester, including a new syllabus page.

We have recently become aware that some instructors are re-using old syllabus pages, which point to outdated content. By registering your section and downloading the syllabus each semester, you will automatically be linked to the most up-to-date content.
