The Solutions Institute has been hard at work getting course materials prepared for Summer 2004. Starting today, you can log into Edison Services, build out your sections, download ANGEL templates, and create customized syllabi for all Online IST courses. You can read more about Edison Services in this month's eNewsletter.

As you utilize Edison Services to create your course sections, please let us know if you are having any problems with the application. We are always looking for user feedback to enable us to improve the service in later releases.

Edison Services Feature List
The current features in Edison Services allow you to do the following:

Add delegates (TA’s) to a course section
The adding of delegates allows you to provide another person with the ability to add a service such as the Course Syllabus Builder and/or the Self and Team Evaluation Tool to a course section. Additionally, the delegate will be granted with the ability to setup and/or modify any of the components within a given service. For example, add a delegate will enable that person to be able to create projects, add students, manage student teams, and view submitted evaluations within the Self and Team Evaluation tool.

Create a course section for any of the IST courses
This feature will provide you with the opportunity to build out a course section for any of the IST courses offered throughout PSU IST. Your ability to do this will allow you to utilize any of the services included within the Edison Services suite. At the time these services include the Self and Team Evaluations tool and the Syllabus Builder. More services will be added in future versions of Edison Services.

Create a customized course syllabus for any course section using a WYSIWG editor
If you are using a prescribed Online IST course Syllabi (Online IST 110, 210, 220, 250), you will now be able to customize the course grading structure and the course checklist through the use of the WYSIWG. If you are teaching any other IST course, you will be able to utilize the WYSIWG editor to create you own customized online syllabus.

Perform basic library searches from you course syllabus
The intent of this feature is to provide you and your students with easier access to some of the library resources. To do this, we have integrated a basic search feature into the course syllabus. This service is located on the bottom left portion of your syllabus and will allow you and your students to search the CAT from each of your course syllabi.

PGSIT Summer 2004
Once again this summer, the School of IST and the IST Solutions Institute will be hosting the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information Technology at the University Park campus. Directed by Virginia Belser, the program brings 66 of the best and brightest high school students to the University Park campus for an intense, five-week residency period. In previous years, portions of the Online IST curriculum have been utilized with the students. Results have been tremendous, with student teams demonstrating very high-level solutions to the Online IST problems.

The PGSIT curriculum focuses on developing critical thinking skills needed for tomorrow’s high-demand careers in the field of Information Technology. With the focus on the innovative online IST courses, students design their own team-based, inspired solutions. The first module of PSU’s freshmen introductory course IST 110 introduces scholars to the fundamentals of Information Sciences and Technology, while advanced courses allow students to specialize in either databases, networking or new media and the Web. Asynchronous Web work is supported by high-level class discussions.

Additionally, scholars receive training in specific skills, attend lectures by guest speakers, and work at length on one of five community service team projects. Field trips support the curricular goal of exposing scholars to the breadth and depth of IT. Finally, a Career Day in conjunction with PGSIT at Drexel allows students from both programs to meet with industry representatives and learn about the potential career and educational opportunities in this field.

It promises to be an exciting five weeks with students feverishly researching, designing, and marketing their solutions. If you are interested in learning more about the integrated curriculum, please contact me at vbelser@ist.psu.edu.

eLearning Support
As you begin setting up course sections through Edison Services, remember that we have several support mechanisms in place.

You can always email elearning@ist.psu.edu for assistance.

For on-demand help, check out our library of support videos at The Solutions Exchange, also linked to throughout Edison Services. To view these videos you will need the Flash Player installed and at least a 56.6 dial-up connection. Currently, there are thirteen videos available. All support videos are also available in PDF format.

If you are setting up your section on a weekday between 9am and 5pm, and have an AIM account, feel free to instant message 'isthelp' to speak with Amy Garbrick, an Instructional Designer and our eLearning Coordinator.

Take a look at the new support video and PDF on how to use the WYSIWYG Editor. The Flash video will show you how to use the WYSIWYG Editor to change your syllabus to meet your needs. You can build a syllabus for any IST course and easily make modifications to it without needing to know html. View the WYSIWYG video or take a look at the WYSIWYG PDF.
