Certificate in IST Almost Complete
The "Certificate in IST," available via the Penn State World Campus, is nearly complete. The certificate program consists of the four Online IST courses currently available (110, 210, 220, & 250). Online IST 110, 220, and 250 are currently available for enrollment, while 210 will be released in the early Spring 2003 semester. All four of the courses are similar in their approach to the resident based hybrid models except they have been converted for a rolling enrollment, asynchronous audience.

We have had well over 100 students take Online IST 110 via the World Campus from literally all over the World in the last year and expect large enrollments for the other three courses in the certificate. These opportunities are perfect for adult learners who can't get to campus, for students trying to get caught up in the IST program, or people seeking solid professional development opportunities. One thing to keep in mind, the Certificate in IST is not available for our Associate or Baccalaureate students; only those students who are World Campus students can receive the certificate.

Curricular Options: SAN 100 Available
The IST Solutions Institute has recently partnered with Infinity I/O to design and develop the Fibre Channel SAN Foundation course. Through this partnership, IST is able to offer a course developed on the proven design and development methodology of the Solutions Institute and the industry expertise of Infinity I/O. This course is offered via the Penn State World Campus, but can also be used within the IST curriculum for integration with other IST courses.

Fibre Channel SAN Foundation introduces Fibre Channel and SAN fundamentals from a vendor-neutral perspective. It provides a practical overview of the industry and technologies, ranging from terminology and concepts to components and topologies. Participants are exposed to the capabilities and limitations of a wide range of Fibre Channel and SAN technologies and techniques, as well as alternative and emerging technologies.

This course, which has been designed as a 15 hour, self-study course can be used to enhance many of the courses currently offered in the IST curriculum. For more information and the ability to log into the Course Content Interface for SAN 100, follow the link below.

It is critical to note that this course cannot be offered via local Continuing Education offices. The terms of the agreement with Infintity I/O are for curricular integration only. Please help us make sure this course is not used beyond the scope of the partnership. If there are audiences outside the resident education population who are interested, please direct them to the Penn State World Campus.

Online IST 210 and Net DB2
The spring semester is almost upon us, and Net DB2 accounts will again be available for all IST faculty. In order to obtain Net DB2 accounts, you will need to email Bart Pursel at the Solutions Institute. Each instructor requesting Net DB2 accounts will have to complete a short application form identifying how many accounts are needed. Get your requests in early as we only have a limited number of accounts to distribute. If you have any questions about Net DB2, feel free to contact Bart.

In addition to Net DB2, IST instructors can utilize DB2 database space provided by Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (ASET) to create data-driven web pages. Supported programming languages include CGI, PHP, ASP, and PERL. Instructors can apply online for accounts at http://aset.psu.edu/accounts/db2.html Users can work with the DB2 space using a DB2 client or command line prompt. Both are available for download from the Penn State PASS server.

A quick reminder, in Fall 2002 a new lab, as well as a new Problem have become part of Online IST 210. The new lab deals with maintaining data integrity by implementing constraints, and the new Parks and Recreation Problem deals with implementing database constraints and preparing a database for Online implementation. If you'd like to take a look at the new lab, visit the Labs Library and download 210.05 PDF. If you want to take a look at the new Problem, visit the Problems Library and download the Parks and Recreation PDF.

Online IST Problems Library
The Solutions Institute is proud to announce the Online IST Problems Library as a new product included within the IST Solution's Exchange. Contained within this site, you will find all versions of the Online IST problems designed and developed for any of the Online IST course offerings. These problems include those developed for the World Campus, asynchronous offerings, those developed for the six-week semester offerings, and those developed for the traditional 17-week hybrid offerings. By visiting the site, you will be able to choose the problem(s) that meet your individual course needs. To help you find the problem that fits your needs, they have been organized by course delivery mode and are displayed to show you the course topics that are covered for each of the problems. Additionally, you have the ability to either view a more detailed description of each of the problems and/or the ability to download and view each of the problem documents.

To view any of the problem documents, you must have the Adobe Acrobat plug-in (available for download at http://www.adobe.com) If you have any questions about the problems, or how to integrate them in your section of Online IST, please contact our eLearning Coordinator at elearning@ist.psu.edu. Please visit the site today by going to http://solutions.ist.psu.edu/exchange/online_ist/problems/index.html.

Strategies for Deploying Quizzes through ANGEL
Many of you have expressed concern regarding the opportunities for cheating within the current quizzing feature of ANGEL. Some of your colleagues have developed ways of working around the cheating issue. Here are some strategies you may consider for your next offering of Online IST:

  1. Reduce the weight associated with the grade for each quiz.
  2. Administer the quiz via ANGEL in a classroom or lab -- set a password so that students outside the classroom cannot access the quiz.
  3. Print the quiz and administer in class with Scantron answer sheets.

If you have implemented other strategies for overcoming cheating with online quizzing, please share them with us.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks

Module Zero Now Easier to Find!
The Module Zero Assignments have long been a required component of all four Online IST courses. These assignments have been designed to give you and your students a chance to get involved in the course immediately. In the past, students and faculty have made it clear that the assignments are critical to success, but are often difficult to find. We have made a simple adjustment to the location of the Module Zero Assignments and have placed them on the IST Solutions Exchange. This single point of entry is linked from the Course Content Interface and provides all the downloads needed to successfully complete the assignments.

Doing these assignments within the first two weeks of an Online IST course is critical to student's overall success. Complete instructions and assessment rubrics can be found in the actual assignments. These assignments are available from the Online IST Overview course as well as from the Resources and Downloads table on the page linked below. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at elearning@ist.psu.edu.
