Online IST Print Library
The Online IST Print Library is in the final stages of development and should be ready within the next several days. This new addition to Online IST will provide faculty and students with greater flexibility and convenience when reading Online IST course materials. Although the Institute hoped to have the Print Library ready before the start of the Spring 2003 semester, the release date has been pushed back.

While the technologies are in place for students and faculty to select and download Topic Packs for all four Online IST courses, the policy issues surrounding its use are still being finalized. The terms and conditions for download are being completed by the legal team representing PSU and the intellectual property office. We hope to have all of the terms and conditions finished and the Print Library fully available very soon. Look for an announcement from us in the coming days and thank you for your patience.

Let Us Know!
The IST Solutions Institute would like to invite all of our faculty members to take part in the first major redesign of the Online IST course components. The Course Content Interface has been in use for nearly three years and is beginning to show its age. Also, we are aware that the registration process can be tedious and does not allow for a great deal of customization in the delivery of courses. To this end, we are looking at adding some new functionality to the courseware to overcome these challenges and really want to hear from you. If you would be interested in providing us with some thoughts, participate in a focus group, or recommend students for a focus group, please send us email at elearning@ist.psu.edu to let us know what you think.

The region that shows the most interest will be where we will hold the focus group sessions. We are anxious to get your thoughts and feedback so we can begin to move to a more streamlined set of materials that more closely meet the needs of our primary stakeholders. Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Spring Semester Reminder
The spring semester is underway, and we wanted to send out a quick reminder to all faculty using Online IST courses and course materials about updates and improvements with Online IST.

Online IST Courses - Online IST 110, 210, 220, and 250 are all available online, in addition to Online IST SAN, which deals with Storage Area Networks and Fibre Channel Technologies. All 5 courses can be accessed via the Solutions Exchange

Course Content Interface - The Course Content Interface for all courses has been updated. Changes include:

  • Module 0 is now part of the "Topics" tab
  • In the "Resources" tab, each course has Online IST General Resources and course specific resources
  • Navigation directions are now provided in the lower left corner of the interface regardless of where the user is in the course
  • The lower left portion of the interface now contains links to Communication Space (ANGEL) and to a Quick Help guide
  • Links to the Problems have been removed from the interface; Problems can now be accessed through the Online IST Problems Library

Online IST Labs and Problems Library - All Online IST Labs now reside in the Online IST Labs Library and all Online IST Problems now reside in the Online IST Problems Library. Each library is sorted by course.

SBL Live - Solutions-Based Learning(SBL) Live provides students and faculty the ability to view presentations by industry experts that have been captured digitally by the Solutions Institute. In addition to viewing the presentations, several discussion activities have been developed that correlate to Online IST courses based on specific presentations.

NetDB2 Accounts - If you are teaching a section of Online IST 210 this semester, you can utilize a web interface to IBM's DB2 to enhance your student's learning experience. To obtain NetDB2 accounts, please contact Bart Pursel.

Registering Your Section - Each semester, we ask that all instructors utilizing Online IST courses and course components to register your section. You can register your section by going to Edison's Toolbox. By registering your section, you will have access to the most up-to-date materials for the current semester. As we continue to make updates to Online IST, it is imperative that instructors register their section each semester to have access to the materials that have links to the current content interface and other essential resources.

Committed to Faculty Development
Happy New Year!

During 2003 the Solutions Institute will maintain its commitment to faculty development. In so doing, we are in the beginning planning stages for an April 2003 half-day faculty development event at one of our campus locales. During such an event it is our intention to provide an overview of the changes and improvements made to Online IST as well as provide more detailed training for course specific tools and resources.

If you would be interested in attending the Spring 2003 Faculty Development event and have specific topics you'd like to see covered, please email me at elearning@ist.psu.edu.
