Online IST FAQ
The Solutions Institute is proud to announce the debut of the Online IST Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. The database of questions can be searched via a drop down menu containing a variety of topics, or by entering a keyword or phrase. Several questions have already been submitted and answered by the Institute. Feel free to visit the Online IST FAQ at:

http://solutions.ist.psu.edu/exchange/community/support/faq/index.html

Using this application, you can search the database to find answers to questions dealing with Online IST courses, Labs, Problems, ANGEL, the syllabus page, and all other topics related to Online IST.

You also have the ability to ask a question by filling out a simple web-based form. Once you ask a question, it is submitted to the Solutions Institute for review. The question will be answered as quickly as possible and then be published, with the corresponding answer, to the FAQ page. You can either check back periodically to see if the question you asked has been answered, or supply us with an email address to have the answer emailed directly to you once the question has been answered.

Please don't hesitate to use the Online IST FAQ page. We receive many questions each semester about Online IST. Instead of answering these questions individually, we can utilize the FAQ page so everyone can benefit and learn from each others' questions.

PGSIT/Online IST Integration
Once again this summer, the School of IST and the IST Solutions Institute will be hosting the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Information Technology. Directed by Virginia Belser, the program brings 75 of the best and brightest high school students to the University Park campus for an intense, five-week residency period. In previous years, portions of the Online IST curriculum have been utilized with the students. Results have been tremendous, with student teams demonstrating very high-level solutions to the Online IST problems. Last year, in an attempt to utilize all pieces of the online curriculum, an overarching problem related to airport security was created. This problem integrated portions of IST 110, 210, 220, and 250 and required students to envision a solution to the airport/homeland security challenge using information technology. The Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security was involved and student solutions were very creative and featured by regional media.

This year, a new overarching challenge has been created to focus on vehicular computing. Student teams will be asked to envision the car of the future and the information technology/systems that could be integrated in order to create an intelligent vehicle. Information systems are fast becoming an integral part of our transportation vehicles. For example, GPS systems guide navigation and embedded systems control the vehicle's performance. In the coming years, computer-based systems will become even more important allowing for mobile commerce, communication, and diagnostics. There are areas for concern, however. The laws associated with using these systems, the privacy issues surrounding "advertising delivered to your car," and the interfaces that allow safe use must all be considered. Teams will use the Online IST curriculum to investigate mobile and vehicular computing, as well as prototype and market their solution to a board of experts.

It promises to be an exciting five weeks with students feverishly researching, designing, and marketing their solutions. If you are interested in learning more about the integrated curriculum, please contact me at kristin@ist.psu.edu.

Online IST Course Content Interface Sports a "New Look"
After 3 successful years, the Online IST Course Content Interface is undergoing a transformation. Based on your feedback and requests, the Solutions Institute has spent the last few months developing a new look and revised user experience for navigating the Online IST courseware. Foremost, the new Online IST course interface will allow users a single, direct page for opening up the Online IST course topics. In addition, users will also be able to access directly: course resources, labs, problem assignments, and other course related documents and libraries.

No need to worry though, if you have grown to love navigating the Online IST courseware through the traditional flash-based course content interface that will still be available as well.

Look for the new Online IST Course Content Interface this fall.

The IST Solutions Institute is proud to announce that we have been selected as a New Media Center of Excellence by the New Media Consortium. The NMC is a "not-for-profit organization that brings forward-thinking learning organizations - colleges, universities, and museums - together with innovative high-tech companies to collaborate." This designation indicates that an organization is "deeply committed to expanding the boundaries of teaching, learning, and creative expression." (http://www.nmc.org)

The proposal for consideration was written and visually designed by a small team within the Institute and focused largely on innovations related to Online IST. Look for national and local press releases about this award very soon!

Online IST on CD-ROM?
Do your students complain that they have trouble accessing the online content? Do your students forget to download the Online IST Roadmap? Would you like to make the Online IST Roadmap and Course Materials available on a CD-ROM for purchase by your students?

The Solutions Institute is aware that some of your students are having problems accessing the Online IST content due to lack of (or lacking) internet access. Therefore we would like to provide students and faculty the option of purchasing a CD-ROM that contains the latest Online IST Roadmap and Course Content. These materials would remain available free of charge through the IST Solutions Exchange.

If you believe you and your students would be interested in this service, please let me know. Email me at elearning@ist.psu.edu.

Best of luck with the end of your semester!

Enjoy the warmth, sun, and flowers of Spring!
