Online IST 302: IT Project Management
The Solutions Institute is undertaking the design and development of the next Online IST course to add to the Online IST Portfolio: Online IST 302, IT Project Management! This course is designed to introduce and explore the basic concepts and practices of project management and help students understand how to plan and manage IT projects successfully. Throughout the course, students will be asked to learn and utilize project management concepts, methodologies, and tools. Students will learn the skills necessary to define project scope, create workable project plans, and manage projects with quality, budget, and schedule in mind. The course is structured around the key phases of a project lifecycle, including initiating a project, developing project plans, executing and managing a project, and closing out a project. In addition, students will be taught how to identify and address the change management and political issues associated with project management. Finally, students will have opportunities to practice the concepts and methodologies they learn by working on case studies and/or real-world problems in teams during the semester.

We are currently seeking content contributors from University Park and around the Commonwealth. If you might be interested in contributing to the course, please send an email to Bart Pursel at:

Edison Services: Syllabus Tool
The Online IST courses have always been supported by syllabi supplied and centrally managed by the IST Solutions Institute. The need to create and deliver a syllabus to a given faculty member was the critical step in giving faculty access to course materials such as the Course Content Interface, Labs, and Problem Assignments. As we move towards our second generation of Online IST courseware, we have made the move towards the creation of a centralized suite of tools called Edison Services. These services offer faculty a common log-in and tools that enable them to create and deploy a customized, dynamically created syllabus that they do not have to download, edit with an html editor, and FTP to web space. We feel as though the syllabus will become the starting point to creating an enhanced and custom Online IST course experience.

The Syllabus Tool is an application that will allow an instructor to create a web-based syllabus used to display course information for any of the Online IST courses. The syllabus will be constructed based upon a template that provides instructors with the basic information required by Penn State University and will also allow instructors to customize their syllabus to meet their individual course needs.

In the past, it has taken faculty no fewer than eight difficult steps to create a syllabus for an Online IST course. Some of these steps require an in-depth knowledge of html or html editors. The new process is approximately four steps and does not require any html or FTP knowledge.

Online IST 250 Revisions
The Solutions Institute is proud to welcome Dr. Gerry Santoro as a Visiting Faculty member for the summer. Dr. Santoro will be working with the Institute's designers and developers to revise Online IST 250, New Media and the Web.

Preliminary plans include shifting the course focus from specific technologies to the processes involved in designing and implementing technology-centered solutions. Plans are underway to create content revolving around the ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate) model, and how to utilize the ADDIE model when undertaking technology projects. The labs for Online IST 250 are currently being reviewed, and we hope to add a few more lab activities to the Labs Library for the Fall 2003 semester.

Look for more updates throughout the summer in the eNewsletter!

mLearning Investigation
We have recently been awarded a grant to investigate and to act upon the potential of mobile devices in learning and assessment. We are currently engaged in constructing an integrated research agenda that focuses on three key areas of mLearning and mCollaboration:

  • Content distribution
  • Just in time assessment and feedback
  • Enabling factors associated with mobility

It is our opinion that mobility has the potential to become one of the most important engines for effective learning in higher education. To achieve our vision of building leaders for the digital global economy, our school is currently taking major steps to create a virtual pervasive learning environment for ultimate learning.

At the School of IST, web-based access has extended the learning reach and physical classroom. However, given the future reach of pervasive computing devices, it has become imperative to transform the Online IST curriculum to an mLearning experience. Many online learning curricula that claim to be "anytime, anywhere" fall short of that in reality due to the tethers of the current desktop computing paradigm. True anytime, anywhere access requires an agile set of learning materials that are flexible and can be deployed across multiple platforms via multiple form factors, such as mobile phones, wireless laptop computers, wireless handheld devices, and unidentified devices that will appear in the future.

Farewell
Hi everyone! I hope your summers are going well!

Recently I accepted a position with GlaxoSmithKline in Moline, Illinois. So, I'll be moving on from the IST Solutions Institute June 5, 2003. I have enjoyed being a part of the Online IST innovations and the IST Faculty Academy, as well as various projects with the Solutions team and IST faculty.

Although I am leaving, the Education and Training team in the Solutions Institute remains dedicated to assisting all of you as you adopt the Online IST Course materials. If you have any questions or concerns, email elearning@ist.psu.edu and a member of the team will get back to you.

Thank you for the opportunities and support you all provided during my tenure as eLearning Coordinator. Best wishes!
